Ballet Informed Pilates: Why How You Move Matters More Than How Long

For years as a professional dancer I learned that the smallest movement could be the most demanding. A slow lift of the arm, a shift in balance, or the way I placed my foot could change how the whole body worked. It was the intention behind the movement that would make all the difference.

That lesson stayed with me when I became a Pilates instructor. You don't always need a longer workout to feel the difference. Sometimes you need to slow down enough to feel what you're doing.

That's the idea behind Élan Method: ballet informed Pilates that helps you move with strength, awareness and a little more grace in everyday life.

What does moving with intention actually mean?

It means paying attention to the movement instead of rushing through it or "ticking it off the list". Where is your weight? Did you align yourself before you started? Can you feel your core supporting you? Are you holding your breath? Could you move with a little more control and a little less tension?

When you notice these things, even a short session becomees meaningful. You begin to understand how your body moves, where you feel strong and where you might need more support. That awareness can carry into the rest of your day, whether you're sitting at a desk, walking, lifting something or simply standing a little taller.

Strength and grace belong together.

Ballet informed Pilatees brings the precision and flow I love from ballet with the core strength and control of Pilates. You don't need dance experience, perfect posture or great flexibility to begin.

Through low impact movement, you can build strength wihtout feeling every session has to leave you exhausted. You can improve your core strength and the control that comes with it, work towards greater flexibility, and become more aware ofhow your body feels and moves. There's room to breathe, release tension and enjoy the process, too.

What can ballet informed Pilates do for you?

  1. A stronger core and more control

Your core supports more than a workout. Building strength there can help you feel steadier as you move through everyday life.

  2. Strength without the pressure to go harder

Slow, focused movements can challenge your muscles just as much if not more. You don't need to be exhausted for it to count.

  3. Greater flexibility

Moving through a comfortable range can help you feel less stiff and more free in your body.

  4. Better body awareness

You start to notice how you stand, breathe and move, and where you might be holding tension you didn't even realise was there.

  5. A low impact way to move

You can work on strength and mobility without jumping or pounding through a workout.

  6. A moment to release stress

Focusing on your breath and movement gives your mind somewhere to land when the day feels full.

And then there's grace. To me, that isn't about looking like a dancer. It's the feeling of moving through your day with more ease, confidence and connection to your body.

How do you stay motivated when life gets busy?

Make the starting point small enough that you can return to it. Ten focused minutes count. So does a longer class when you have the time and energy.

Choose movements you enjoy. Notice how you feel afterwards, not just what you see in the mirror. Perhaps you feel stronger getting up from the floor, more aware of your posture, or calmer after taking time to move and breathe. Those changes matter.

I know what it's like for life and work to take up so much of your space that time for yourself falls at the bottom of the list. That's one reason I created Élan Method. I want movement to feel like something you can come back to, even in a full week, and something you look forward to doing

You don't have to spend hours exercising to begin caring for your body. Start with a little time. Move with intention. Let it become a part of your life.
